In Stamullen, the De Buitléar family is leading a movement to reconnect young people with nature through gardening. Their initiative, "Growing Together", encourages children to plant and nurture flowers, fostering a love for the outdoors while strengthening community bonds.
With a strong commitment to eco-friendly gardening, the family—Fiona, Ciarán, Sam, Zack, and grandfather Frank—has been advocating for sustainable practices through their popular blog, Gardening Well. Their efforts have reached thousands, inspiring people to grow their own plants and embrace biodiversity.
The "Growing Together" project provides local Beaver Scouts with materials to grow three flowers from seed. Once grown, each child keeps one, gifts one to a grandparent, and shares another with a neighbor—spreading joy and strengthening connections.
Ciarán emphasizes the mental health benefits of gardening, describing it as a form of active meditation that helps people disconnect from screens and enjoy the fresh air. The family has also distributed plants to vulnerable community members, brightening lives during challenging times.
Thanks to support from Meath County Council Climate Action & SDG, the family is scaling up their efforts, providing more gardening kits and educational resources. Their goal is to make gardening accessible to all, fostering a greener, more connected community.
Follow the Gardening Well blog and Stamullen Gardening Facebook page to stay updated on their latest projects. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, there’s a place for everyone in this growing community.
